PROFILE
Earning a BA in Studio Art from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. I chose to focus on Ceramics, Sculpture, and Photography. After a number of solo exhibits, there was a briefly sought after career as a Doula, after witnessing the brilliant soul work required for that profession. At the request of a friend, I retreated to Taiwan for a visit and those four weeks became the beginning of a great turning point. I felt pulled to Taiwan and never left, earning my MA in International Education, meeting my incredible husband, and having two amazing children.
Artist Statement:
Major life events offer an opportunity for self-reflection and growth and never have I worked through both of these more than after having children. After both births, I felt a pull to ‘get back to who I was’ before them, as if that ‘self’ was the fullest version of me.
During this time, I found beauty and comfort in the images and idea of molting, of shedding one's former self. While I had worn that self - the one I longed to return to - as a protective layer and identity, we were created for change. There is a deep appreciation for the identities that have carried me, as they were comfortable and made sense for those seasons, so I acknowledge them as their pieces fall away.
This entire concept led me to explore the mechanics of molting and inspired The Evolution Series. It was my hope to create wearable art that pushed the boundaries of form and function, all while celebrating the complexity involved in my own evolution.
